The most common causes (in order)
- Dirty air filter or coil. Restricted airflow is the #1 culprit in Florida. A clogged filter can even freeze the coil, which then blows warm. Cheap and easy to rule out first.
- Failed capacitor. The small part that starts your compressor and fan. It dies often in our heat — the unit hums but won't cool. Common and inexpensive to replace.
- Low refrigerant / a leak. If refrigerant is low, the system can't pull heat out of your home. This almost always means a leak that needs sealing, not just a "top-off."
- Dirty outdoor condenser. Caked in grass, dust, or lawn clippings, it can't dump heat. A gentle rinse can restore cooling.
- Compressor trouble. The expensive one. If the compressor is failing, you'll often get warm air and odd noises.
- Thermostat or wiring. Sometimes it's as simple as a thermostat set wrong, dead batteries, or a tripped breaker.
Check these yourself first (5 minutes)
- Thermostat set to COOL and below room temp? Swap the batteries.
- Check your breaker — reset it if the outdoor unit is dead.
- Pull the filter. If it's gray and clogged, replace it.
- Look at the outdoor unit — is it caked in debris? Is the fan spinning?
If it's iced over: turn cooling OFF and the fan ON to melt it, then replace the filter. A frozen coil is a common reason for warm air. If it re-freezes, it needs a pro.
